About
Puerto Rico
Geography
|
Puerto Rico is
a Commonwealth of the United States of America. American citizens traveling
here do not require a passport, while non-U.S. citizens do require a
passport. Puerto Rico's currency is the US dollar and power outlets are also
U.S. standard. Spanish is the primary language, but English is widely
spoken.
The island is 100 miles long and 35 miles wide,
and ranges from lush tropical rain forest in the north to rare tropical dry
forest in the South. You can go from the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea
in a couple of hours. In the City of San Juan you will find casinos,
nightlife and great shopping opportunities. At the laid back southwest of
the Island you will find the best diving. If you have the time, Puerto Rico
has a lot to offer. |
 |
 |
Puerto Rico is the most diverse and unique island
in the Caribbean. Puerto Rico has been blessed with hundreds of beautiful
natural attractions for you to explore thorough out the entire coast,
hillside and offshore islands that island possesses.
In Porta del Sol you will find some of the
world’s great surfing areas and beaches. The beach area starts east of
Isabela and continues around the coastline to Añasco. Farther on is the
great port city of Mayagüez with its first-rate zoo, historic theater and
beautiful plaza. Even farther down the coast you pick up more beaches,
excellent seafood and some outstanding coastal forests. For example, you
could go from a Forest Reserve in Maricao to a Dry Forest in Guánica.
Throughout the area you will find Paradores and Mesones Gastronómicos, a
World Biosphere Reserve or a beautifully restored lighthouse park.

Surfing,
windsurfing, kite boarding and other wave sailing sports happen year round,
thanks to the trade winds. Surfers call Puerto Rico "The Maui of the
Atlantic" and their favorite destination is the windy northwest coast,
around the towns of Isabela and Rincón in Porta del Sol. Some of the best
winter surfing can be experienced in Rincón, whose name translates to
"corner." Known for world-class surfing, Rincón was the site of the 1968
World Surfing Championship and hosts several annual competitions. Visitors
and local surfers come together to catch a wave. |

Golf |
If you love golf,
you’re going to love Porta del Sol. But you don’t need to be a world champ
to appreciate the beauty and variety of our courses. Both courses, Club
Deportivo del Oeste and Punta Borinquen Golf Club, share the island’s
year-round summer weather, tempered by the cool, gentle breezes of the trade
winds. You are almost guaranteed a brilliant tropical sky and glimpses of
sparkling white sand beaches backed by the blue Atlantic Ocean or the
turquoise Caribbean Sea.
Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned pro, you can enjoy golfing at
Porta del Sol! |

Kayaking |
You
don’t have to be an Olympic champion to have an exciting experience running
the island’s only real rapids on the Tanamá River or gliding silently along
the island’s only navigable river, the Espíritu Santo. A kayak or canoe is a
marvelous way to sightsee or bird watch on the island’s many man-made lakes,
or on its countless coastal inlets, coves and bays.
Some of the most popular sites for ocean
kayaking are along the coasts of the island municipalities of Vieques and
Culebra, Ballenas Bay bordering the Guánica Tropical Dry Forest in the
southwest, and the small east coast islets and cays off Fajardo.
There are many places you can rent a
kayak, join an excursion or take classes. Start your search by contacting
Club Kayak de Puerto Rico, whose members know the island almost as well as
the Indians did!

Bioluminescent Bays |
"Hidden along the
Caribbean coast is one of the most spectacular Bioluminescent Bays in the
world. The mysterious blue-green light is created by micro-organisms which
thrive in an environment uniquely suited to their needs. A trip into the bay
on a balmy night is a magical experience. Fish flash by in dark water, and a
swim is like floating through stardust." - Captain Sharon Grasso |

|
| La Parguera |
La
Parguera is a small fishing village of approximately 2,000 people, on the
southwest coast of Puerto Rico. During weekends many visitors and local
youths hang out on the main street, people watching and listening to bands
playing in the open bars. Divers spend time here too, of course. During the
week the Village is very quiet, but several bars and restaurants remain open
all week so you can enjoy the night. Every night you can board a boat for a
trip to the rare bioluminescent bay, one of the few such bays
in the world. La Parguera is approximately 2 hours by car from San Juan and
45 minutes from both Mayaguez and Ponce, where you can find shopping malls,
casinos and restaurants. |

| Camuy Caves |
The
Camuy River is responsible for creating one of the largest cave systems and
the third largest underground river in the world. When the Camuy River
vanishes into the Blue Hole near the town of Lares, it begins a subterranean
journey through one of the most massive cave networks in the world. The river
runs through a network of caves, canyons and sinkholes that have been cut
through the limestone karst base in this region over the course of millions
of years. The caves were probably known to the Pre-Colombian Taíno indians
and later to the local farmers but only came to the attention of
spelologists in the 1950's.The Puerto Rico Land Administration developed and
opened the area in 1987. Visiting the caves is like being transported to
other dimension... |

Guánica Dry Forest Reserve |
(a
UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve) is one of the most significant dry
forests in the world.
The 18,000-acre area is a paradise for
nature lovers and bird watchers ( over 100 species, many of them only to be
found here! ). The countless mangrove trees offer a spectacular view.

Arecibo Observatory |
As
the site of the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, the Observatory
is recognized as one of the most important national centers for research in
radio astronomy, planetary radar and terrestrial aeronomy. Use of the
Arecibo Observatory is available on an equal, competitive basis to all
scientists from throughout the world. Observing time is granted on the basis
of the most promising research as ascertained by a panel of independent
referees who review the proposals sent to the Observatory by interested
scientists. Every year about 200 scientists visit the Observatory facilities
to pursue their research project, and numerous students perform observations
that lead to their master and doctoral dissertations.
The site is so impressive that movie
stars and Hollywood producers have used the observatory in various films,
most recently in Contact, the film adaptation of the Carl Sagan
bestseller that starred Jodie Foster. It was also the setting of the finale
of Pierce Brosnan's first James Bond flick Golden Eye. |
